Citi Foundation and CAEMBA Join Forces to Transform Vulnerable Communities in Ecuador

Fundación Raíz CAEMBA has been selected as the first non-governmental organization in Ecuador to receive the prestigious Global Innovation Challenge Grant awarded by the Citi Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Citi Group, one of the most important financial institutions in the world. This award seeks to support innovative projects that address key social challenges, such as poverty, lack of access to basic services, and the promotion of economic equality at a global level. This recognition, which includes significant financial support, will allow Fundación Raíz CAEMBA to expand its Same Tonchigüe Próspero program, focused on the construction of sustainable bamboo homes, female empowerment, and the creation of economic development opportunities for families in extreme poverty.

The Prosperous Same-Tonchigüe Project

Prosperous Same-Tonchigüe aims to revitalize two coastal communities affected by extreme poverty, violence, criminal gangs, and unemployment through a comprehensive intervention. Through this program, Fundación Raíz CAEMBA has achieved important milestones, including:

  • Construction of sustainable bamboo homes
  • Female empowerment: Ownership of homes is granted to women
  • Health and sanitation: All homes are equipped with biodigesters and sand filters to ensure access to safe drinking water.
  • Vocational training and entrepreneurship: Community residents receive training in vocational and business skills, as well as seed funds.
  • Sports as a tool for inclusion: The «Sports for Life» program is expanding to provide sports activities to more than 300 children and adolescents, promoting health and keeping them away from risky environments.

Partnership with Citi Foundation

Thanks to the support of Citi Foundation, Same Tonchigüe Próspero will reach new goals in the coming years. This support will allow the impact of the project to be scaled, providing decent housing to more than 3,000 people, improving community infrastructure and strengthening the local economy through training and entrepreneurship.

A Call for New Allies

Fundación Raíz CAEMBA invites companies committed to development and equity in Ecuador to join this effort. We seek to create a match between Citi Foundation and private organizations that share our vision of a more equal and prosperous Ecuador. Together, we can generate significant change in the most needy communities, fulfilling dreams and building a more sustainable future.
